Dan and Liz Mullen

a desire to make a difference in students' lives

For Dan Mullen and his wife Liz, it was only natural to get involved with the Sun Devil Family Association. Both are ASU alums, and their son, Jonathan, became an ASU alumnus in 2009. The Mullens’ involvement spans many years, first as SDFA board members and now with the Parents of Alums group. The PLUMS group was established to offer a meaningful opportunity for parents who want to continue their involvement and support of ASU even after their children have graduated.

“The reason we support the Sun Devil Family Association is to make a difference in students’ lives,” says Dan. “It supports their intellectual development and learning of different things. To work in a specific discipline today, you need a college degree. I don’t want to see students graduate with a six-digit debt bill.”

One of the most touching occasions for Dan and Liz is when they connect with past SDFA scholarship recipients. At a ceremony hosted by the SDFA, those students have the chance to talk about what the financial help meant to them.

“Often they will approach us and tell us that helping them changed their life,” says Dan. “Those groups of scholars who are now in the workforce also start giving back. That’s a real tribute to how much it meant to them. It is important to give back to the community, and very personally rewarding for the alumni to give back to the university that educated them. If you have the ability to do so, then you should.”
