ASU parents are a valuable part of the ASU community and as their students graduate, we don’t want to lose the enthusiasm, knowledge and support for our Sun Devil families. Just as their grads will always be alums, they will always be the parents of alums and that special relationship is important. So, a new group was created called Parents of Alums, more commonly known as PLUMS, as a meaningful way for parents to stay engaged and connected after their students graduate. PLUMS provide the university with valued and experienced parent volunteers. Active PLUMS share their experiences:
“For me, being a PLUM keeps me connected with the SDFA and allows me to share with the new parents how supportive the Family Association is in staying connected while living so far away from the ASU Campus.” Peggy Camden, PLUM ’05
SDFA Regional Board member and PLUM ’14 Jeni Makinen shares, “Since we’ve started partnering with the Alumni Association in our area, we’ve participated in game-watch events, cohosted happy hours, career networking events and more. This also provides a nice bridge to the new alums themselves, and hopefully they will choose to pay it forward and get involved with the next group of kids trying to make their own college decisions. We see it as a local connection to a lifelong relationship with ASU.”
“Being involved with the SDFA has allowed me to make a difference in the lives of the student scholars we support. Once I had routinely participated in university events that included working with students and other parents, I found myself looking forward to the next event. This doesn’t change once your own student graduates and the SDFA PLUMS offer the opportunity to continue.” Jodi Christensen, PLUM ’12
How do PLUMS stay engaged?
- PLUMS Council — Members serve on the scholarship committee and as the advisory body to the SDFA Alums Council and spearhead Homecoming participation each year.
- PLUMS Ambassadors — Members provide logistical help for the scholarship committee, serve on the parent calling committee, welcome new parents at orientations and assist at university and SDFA sponsored events.
- Regional PLUMS — Out-of-state PLUMS work with the SDFA Regional Council and alumni chapters to host or assist at Nationwide Sun Devil Family Coffee Days, Send-Offs and recruiting events.
All parents of ASU alumni are encouraged to become active PLUMS. To learn more about volunteer opportunities and how PLUMS are making a difference, contact the SDFA at 480-965-7625 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
