Najat says she is just one of many scholarship recipients whose life has been touched by the ASU Sun Devil Family Association's generosity.
"Growing up, I didn't know anyone who had applied to college," says Najat. She had been involved in high school but thought attending community college was as far as she could go due to financial constraints.
When she was accepted into ASU, she began researching scholarship support since financial assistance was needed for her to attend. She applied to 40 scholarships without her parents even knowing she was applying. "They are two hard-working people but they can't afford to pay for college," she says. "I didn't want them to be disappointed if it didn't happen."
If I didn't have this scholarship, I would not be here today. It is such a relief to my parents that, in tough times, when it feels like it is closing in on all sides, paying for college is a huge burden that we don't have to worry about.Najat
When she heard from the SDFA, she expected another rejection. However, she was asked in for an interview. When she arrived at the interview, she was pleasantly surprised to see welcoming parents waiting to talk to her.
She is now a junior, majoring in English and has maintained a 3.9 cumulative GPA. She has even had two successful internships, one with College Affair magazine and one with The Arizona Republic.
"Imagine how this has changed my opinion of myself, and how proud my parents are that, not only is their daughter at ASU, she's excelling and embraced by the university and the family association," she says.
She says it has also affected how her family members see their futures. Her 14-year-old brother tells her he's going to be a CEO one day. "If I didn't have this scholarship, I would not be here today," says Najat. "It is such a relief to my parents that, in tough times, when it feels like it is closing in on all sides, paying for college is a huge burden that we don't have to worry about."
